The horses round the first turn during the 142nd Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday May 7, 2016.

With the University of Kentucky’s men’s basketball team making an early exit from the Big Dance, it’s time to turn attention to Louisville and the rapidly approaching Kentucky Derby and it’s two week festival.

Our team coverage will begin with the main festival kickoff event: Thunder over Louisville… a day long air show, music and fireworks display that will bring nearly three quarters of a million people to the banks of the Ohio River for the Saturday kick-off to see one of the largest fireworks displays in America.

Thunder happens to fall on Earth Day this year, which also happens to be the same day as the March for Science event. The Louisville march is going to be held on Sunday 4/23 because of Thunder.

Then we will be back on Thursday thru Saturday covering the hot-air balloon events. Later on Saturday the Ken-ducky Derby takes place where thousands of rubber ducks are released on the Ohio River. The ducks are purchased as a fund raiser for Harbor House, a local non-profit for adults with physical and cognitive disabilities. Also Saturday is the opening session at Churchill Downs for racing under the lights.

Bed Races, Steamboat Races, and lots of horse racing is in the plans for the week including the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby.

Stay tuned for stories from this year’s events.
