I’m fond to quote this dude named Murphy and a certain Law of life Murphy coined;

If anything can go wrong, it will!

Murphy

And remember! Murphy was an optimist!

It’s all about the horses. A training jockey takes a training trip on a horse running later in the week

I got to spend an extra week in Louisville, chillin’ with my mother-in-law, doing my day gig, then here come’s “The Cold”. Since the Friday before Thanksgiving, I’ve had a total of about 6 weeks where I would consider my upper respiratory track my normal baseline. The respiratory virus du jour has decided to make my life miserable. In fact, I think I may have bounced one, and got another one right behind it*. To make matters worse, Sherry got it too. We are both a royal mess.

* This could just be allergies. The Ohio River Valley Pollen counts are insane. But I digress.

Feeling under the weather, meant not wanting to get up early to go to Dawn at the Downs. I spent about 15 minutes total photographing a few stragglers on the track between sessions. Wednesday morning came, and by 10 am, we looked at each other and realized that trying to be joyful on the bow of a steamboat cruising in the cold and potentially contagious didn’t make a lot of sense, so we canceled our ride on the Belle of Louisville. Given this is our favorite event of the week, it was a big choice to just say no.

We had already planned to not go to the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby this year, but instead go to the family Derby party. Derby parties themselves, are a very cool experience. You get to hang with family and friends, eat good food, drink as much as you like, and cheer for your favorite horse in the comfort of your own home or backyard. Not getting tickets, considering how sick we are rolling back to Raleigh, NC, was the right call. Neither of us would have felt up to spending two additional days at the track.

So as you plan your next great adventure, realize that some things are just not meant to be. Judge your whole adventure by all of the good things.

We got to spend time with family and friends we don’t see often. We made it to several events that were a blast to participate in, and we are coming home with good memories.

So until next year, enjoy your travels. Try to get away from the grind and do something fun!
